How to Install a Video Doorbell Yourself

Installing a video doorbell is one of the more approachable smart-home jobs, but it splits into two quite different projects depending on the doorbell you bought. A battery (wire-free) doorbell is almost pure DIY: charge it, mount it, pair it, done. Before you start: which path are you on?

Look behind your existing doorbell button. If there are two small wires running into the wall, you have doorbell wiring and can install either a wired or a battery doorbell. If there is nothing there - or you rent, or there was never a bell at this door - you are on the battery path, and the wiring sections below do not apply to you. Either way, gather the basics before you begin: the mounting bracket and screws from the box, the app installed on your phone with your account set up and Wi-Fi to hand, and a drill (with the right bit for brick, stucco, or wood), a screwdriver, and a small level. Wired installs add one more: a way to confirm your transformer voltage, which we cover below. The battery (wire-free) path, step by step

A battery doorbell is designed so anyone can fit it. Work through it in this order:

1. Charge it fully first. Plug the doorbell (or its removable battery) into the supplied cable and let it reach a full charge before you mount anything - it makes pairing smoother and saves you pulling it back down an hour later. 2. Set it up in the app while it is still in your hand. Add the device, join it to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and confirm you get a live view - it is far easier to troubleshoot a connection at the kitchen table than up a ladder. 3. Mark and drill the mount. Hold the bracket at a sensible height, use the level so the view is not tilted, mark the holes, and drill them (using the included wall plugs for masonry). Add the angle wedge here if your kit includes one and you want to aim toward a path or gate. 4. Screw the bracket on and clip the doorbell to it. 5. Test a press. Ring it, confirm your phone and any smart speakers announce the visitor, and adjust the motion zones in the app. That is the whole job - usually well under half an hour.

The wired path: turn off the breaker first

The single most important step on a wired install comes before you touch a wire: switch off the breaker that feeds the doorbell circuit at your electrical panel. Doorbell wiring is low-voltage and the risk is modest, but killing the power removes any shock risk and, just as importantly, prevents you shorting the two wires together while you work. Once the breaker is off, remove the old button: unscrew it from the wall, ease it away, and detach the two wires from its terminals. Those two low-voltage wires are what your new doorbell connects to. Tape or gently bend them so they cannot slip back into the wall cavity while you set up the new unit - a wire that disappears behind the siding turns a 30-minute job into an afternoon.

Check the transformer before you wire anything

A wired video doorbell draws more power than the simple button it replaces, so it depends on a transformerthat supplies enough voltage. Before you commit, confirm your transformer meets the doorbell's stated requirement - the maker publishes an exact voltage (and sometimes a VA rating) in the product listing, and older homes sometimes have a transformer too weak for a modern doorbell. Wired doorbell transformers are low-voltage AC devices, commonly rated somewhere in the 16 to 24 volt AC range, but do not assume - read the number the manufacturer requires and match it. The transformer usually lives near your consumer unit, in the basement, in a closet, or behind the existing chime, and its rating is printed on the casing. Connect the wires, mount, and sort the chime

With the power off and the transformer confirmed, connect the two low-voltage wires to the terminals on the new doorbell or its bracket - doorbell wiring is not polarised, so either wire can go to either terminal - and tighten them down. Feed any slack neatly back toward the wall, then mount the bracket, drilling and plugging as needed for your wall type, and clip the doorbell on. Now handle the chime, which is where wired installs most often go quiet. Many video doorbells need a small diode (usually in the box) fitted at your existing chime so a mechanical or digital chime rings correctly - or, on some setups, a bypass / jumper moduleat the chime so the doorbell is powered while the old mechanical chime is silenced and you use the app or an included plug-in chime instead. Restore power, pair, and configure

Once everything is wired and mounted, switch the breaker back on. Open the app, add the doorbell, join it to your Wi-Fi, and confirm a live view. Then find the chime settings and tell the app which indoor chime you have - mechanical (a physical ding-dong striker) or digital (an electronic tone) - because getting this wrong is a common reason a correctly wired doorbell will not ring. A note on safety and when to call someone

Doorbell circuits are low-voltage, which makes this a friendlier job than mains wiring - but two rules still stand. First, always kill the breaker before touching the wires; the voltage is low, not zero, and a short can damage the transformer. Second, if confirming or upgrading a transformer, working at your electrical panel, or fitting a diode at the chime leaves you uneasy, hand those parts to an electrician or handyperson - it is a quick job for them and removes all doubt.
