Locks
The lock is easy. Whether it works with your phone, your voice assistant and your front door is the whole decision — and it's the one every listing hides.

Every smart lock throws a bolt from your phone. The reason one is right for you and another is a daily annoyance comes down to a single question the box never answers clearly: does it work with the phone, assistant and hub you already have?
An iPhone household that wants to tap their Apple Watch to unlock needs Apple Home Key — a feature only a handful of locks support (Schlage Encode Plus, Level Lock+, Aqara U100). An Alexa household wants a lock that announces and unlocks through Echo. A Google home wants Google Home support. Buy the wrong one and you get a lock that works, technically, but not the way you live. This is exactly why we publish a device-to-ecosystem compatibility matrix on the smart-locks hub and in the lock compatibility guide — model by model, from the manufacturers' own documentation.
The second real fork: a retrofit lock (like the August) keeps your existing deadbolt and keys and motorizes the inside — renters love it, and you keep using your old keys. A full-replacement deadbolt (Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Level) swaps the whole mechanism and usually adds a keypad or fingerprint reader. Neither is better; they solve different problems, and we say which is which on every review.
Decide your ecosystem, then your form factor, then read the roundup. The mistake we see constantly: buying a Wi-Fi lock and being surprised the battery drains fast, or buying a Bluetooth-only lock and being surprised you can't unlock it from work. Most locks talk Bluetooth up close and need a bridge or built-in Wi-Fi for remote control — know which you're getting before you buy, and read do smart locks work without Wi-Fi if you're unsure.

The Schlage Encode Plus is a full-replacement deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi, Apple HomeKit and Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock, plus Alexa - our top overall lock.

Review
The Level Lock+ is a nearly invisible smart deadbolt with Apple Home Key, built-in Wi-Fi and support for Apple, Alexa and Google - discreet, but with no keypad in the box.

Comparison
August's retrofit convenience versus the Schlage Encode Plus full deadbolt with Apple Home Key. We call it for each buyer - Schlage for most, August for renters.

Guide
Smart locks keep working without Wi-Fi: the keypad, keys and Bluetooth are local. Only remote unlock and voice assistants need the internet. Full breakdown inside.

Guide
Smart locks run on batteries, warn you long before they die, and keep a physical-key or jump-terminal backup - so a dead battery or a power cut never locks you out.
