Ecosystem is the whole decision

An iPhone household that wants to tap their Apple Watch to unlock needs Apple Home Key — a feature only a handful of locks support (Schlage Encode Plus, Level Lock+, Aqara U100). An Alexa household wants a lock that announces and unlocks through Echo. A Google home wants Google Home support. Buy the wrong one and you get a lock that works, technically, but not the way you live. Retrofit or full replacement?

The second real fork: a retrofit lock (like the August) keeps your existing deadbolt and keys and motorizes the inside — renters love it, and you keep using your old keys. A full-replacement deadbolt (Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Level) swaps the whole mechanism and usually adds a keypad or fingerprint reader. Neither is better; they solve different problems, and we say which is which on every review. What to buy first & the mistake to avoid

Decide your ecosystem, then your form factor, then read the roundup. Two checks before you order anything

First, the door.
