First, what each one is
Alexa is Amazon's voice assistant and smart-home platform. SmartThings is Samsung's smart-home platform. It is a hub-and-app ecosystem: historically you paired devices to a SmartThings or Aeotec hub, and today that role is also filled by the SmartThings Station, newer Samsung TVs and appliances with a built-in hub, and the SmartThings app. Its defining edge is native support for Z-Wave and Zigbee - two low-power radios that Alexa, Google and Apple do not speak on their own - alongside being a Matter controller. Amazon's Echo line is deep and inexpensive - small round speakers, Dots, Show displays in several sizes, and purpose-built controllers - which is a big reason so many homes land on Alexa. SmartThings is not really a speaker company; its hardware story is the hub itself (a standalone SmartThings Station, an Aeotec SmartThings hub, or a hub built into a Samsung TV or appliance) plus the phone app. So if your priority is putting a voice speaker in every room without much outlay, Alexa wins on hardware economics. Voice control
Voice is Alexa's home turf. Talking to an Echo is the primary way most people use Alexa, it is forgiving of natural, mumbled device commands, and it has an enormous library of third-party skills. SmartThings is app-and-automation-first; it does not ship its own room speakers, so most people who want voice on top of SmartThings pair it with Alexa or Google.
