Zigbee and Z-Wave are the two radios that ran the smart home before Wi-Fi gadgets took over the shelf, and they are still the best choice for the unglamorous devices a real setup needs most: cheap sensors, door and window contacts, motion detectors, buttons. They share a lot - both are low-power mesh radios, both need a hub, and both are invisible to you once running. But they differ in a few ways that genuinely affect what you can buy and how well it works, and getting the difference straight saves you from a house half-built on the wrong one. What they have in common (and why it's good)

Both Zigbee and Z-Wave are mesh networks, which is their shared superpower. Device selection: Zigbee wins on breadth and price

The most practical difference is what you can actually buy. Zigbee has the larger, cheaper device catalog by a wide margin - a huge selection of inexpensive sensors, bulbs and plugs from many brands, which is why a Zigbee house is usually the more affordable one to fill out. If you want to scatter a dozen cheap contact and motion sensors around the home, Zigbee is where the value is. Z-Wavehas a smaller catalog, but it is a mature and well-regulated one, historically strong in security sensors and locks, with a reputation for tight certification so devices tend to interoperate cleanly. Range and interference: Z-Wave's quiet advantage

Here is where Z-Wave earns its keep. Zigbee runs on the crowded 2.4GHz band - the same airspace as your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microwave - so in a dense-Wi-Fi home it can suffer interference if channels are not chosen carefully. Many popular hubs speak Zigbee - a SmartThings-style hub, an Aqara hub, a Hue bridge - so Zigbee is the easier radio to get started with today. Z-Wave support is rarer and tends to live in SmartThings-class hubs; notably, several otherwise-excellent modern hubs skip Z-Wave entirely.
