Do Smart Home Devices Work Without Internet?

"Do smart home devices work without internet?" is really three questions wearing one coat, and separating them is the whole answer. Losing your internet (your provider is down, but your home network is fine) is not the same as losing your Wi-Fi (the router itself is off, so devices cannot even talk to each other), which is not the same as losing power (nothing runs at all). Most smart devices tolerate the first far better than the second or third. The short version: things that were designed to work locally - at the door, on a memory card, on a real hub - tend to keep going, while anything that depends on a company's servers for its core job goes quiet. First, name the outage: internet vs Wi-Fi vs power
When your internet service drops but your router keeps running, your home network is still alive. Video doorbells: the chime may ring, the alerts will not
A video doorbell is a camera with a button, so it inherits the camera rules, with one extra wrinkle. If your doorbell is wired to a traditional indoor chime, pressing the button can still ring that chime because that circuit is local wiring, not the internet.
