Can You Still Use a Physical Key With a Smart Lock?

It is one of the first things people ask before switching: if I put a smart lock on my door, can I still use a key? The reassuring answer is usually yes - but it depends entirely on which of three types of smart lock you buy. Some keep a traditional keyway as a backup, some are fully keyless by design, and some do not touch your existing key at all because they reuse it. Understanding which camp a lock falls into is the difference between confidently going keyless and being surprised on the porch. Case one: full-replacement deadbolts with a keyed backup

The most common smart lock is a full-replacement deadbolt - you unscrew your old deadbolt and fit the smart one in its place. Case two: keyless models with no keyway at all

A growing number of smart locks are fully keyless by design - there is simply no keyhole on the outside. Entry is by code, phone, or fingerprint instead, and the reasoning is deliberate: a keyway is the part a lock-picker or bump-key attacks, and a spare key is a liability if it is lost or copied. Remove the keyway and you remove that whole attack surface. The obvious question is what happens in an emergency, and keyless makers answer it with battery-jump options: many keyless locks expose a couple of terminals (or a micro-USB / USB-C port) on the underside where you touch a 9V battery or a power bank to wake the lock long enough to enter your code. So keyless does not mean lockout-proof-only-by-luck - it means the backup is electronic rather than mechanical. Case three: retrofit locks that reuse your existing key

The third type is the one people forget, and it is often the neatest answer to "can I keep my key?" What to do in a dead-battery lockout

First, a dead-battery lockout is rare and well-signposted: smart locks warn you repeatedly - in the app, with beeps and with lights - long before the batteries actually give out, so the honest advice is to swap them on the first low warning and the problem never arises. But if you ignore every warning and the batteries do die, your recovery depends on the type. A keyed lock: use the physical key. A keyless lock: use its battery-jump terminals or port to bring it back to life, then enter your code. A retrofit lock: use your existing physical key in the untouched exterior cylinder. Do you actually want a keyed backup?

Here is the decision, honestly framed, because there is no universally right answer. Keep a keyed backup if you want the certainty that a metal key always works no matter what the electronics do, if others rely on physical keys, or if the idea of a fully electronic front door makes you uneasy. Go keyless if you would rather remove the pick-and-bump attack surface a keyway represents, you dislike managing spare keys, and you are comfortable staying ahead of battery warnings and using a jump port in the worst case. And choose a retrofit if the real goal is simply to add smart control while keeping the exact key setup you have now.
