There are two fundamentally different recording modes - continuous, where the camera captures every second around the clock, and event-based, where it only records when it detects motion or a person. Why battery cameras almost never record 24/7
The single biggest reason a camera records on events rather than continuously is power. A battery-powered Wi-Fi camera or doorbell is engineered to sip charge, so it deliberately sleeps and only wakes when its sensor detects motion. Recording every second around the clock would keep the radio and sensor running constantly and flatten the battery in hours or days instead of months - so battery cameras record event-only by design, and no setting turns them into a true 24/7 recorder without external power. Which cameras can record continuously

Continuous recording is wonderful until you meet the storage bill.
