Strip away the app and the styling, and a smart lock is a simple idea: a small electric motor turns the deadbolt, and some electronics decide when to turn it. Everything else - the keypad, the fingerprint reader, the Wi-Fi, the phone tap - is just a different way of telling that motor "lock" or "unlock." Once you see it that way, the whole category stops being mysterious, and the choices that actually matter (how it mounts, how it connects, how it is powered) become easy to reason about. The core: a motor that throws the bolt

At the heart of every smart lock is a motorized deadbolt. In a traditional lock, your hand turns the thumbturn or the key, and that rotation throws the bolt into the door frame. A smart lock replaces (or adds to) your hand with a small motor and a set of gears: when the electronics get a valid "unlock" signal, the motor spins, the bolt retracts, and the door opens - and the reverse happens to lock. That is the entire mechanical story. Because the motor and the brains need electricity, every smart lock runs on batteries (a few can be wired, but batteries are the norm). And because it is making a security decision, the electronics check that whatever asked to unlock - a code, a fingerprint, a phone - is actually authorized before the motor moves. Full replacement vs retrofit: two ways it meets your door

There are two fundamentally different ways a smart lock attaches to your door, and this is the first real decision you make. A full-replacement smart lock swaps your entire deadbolt for a new one: you remove the old lock, inside and out, and fit the smart lock in its place, usually with a new exterior that may carry a keypad or a fingerprint reader. You are getting brand-new hardware end to end, which is why full-replacement locks can be security-graded and can add exterior features like a keypad - but it also means the outside of your door changes, which is why it is the wrong choice for a rental.

A retrofit smart lock takes the opposite approach: it keeps your existing deadbolt and just motorizes it from the inside. You remove only the interior thumbturn, attach the smart body over the mechanism you already have, and it turns that thumbturn for you. The exterior of the door - the keyway, the hardware, your physical keys - does not change at all. The ways in: app, code, fingerprint, tap, key

The most visible difference between smart locks is how many ways they let you open the door. Here are the common methods, from most "smart" to most traditional:

  • App and Bluetooth.Your phone talks to the lock directly over Bluetooth when you are nearby, so you can tap "unlock" in the app from the driveway. This works without any internet because it is a short-range, phone-to-lock connection.
  • Wi-Fi remote.When the lock can reach the internet - through built-in Wi-Fi or a hub - you can lock and unlock from anywhere and get alerts when the door opens. This is the feature people mean when they say "control it from work."
  • Keypad code. A touchscreen or button keypad on the exterior lets anyone with a PIN walk in - no phone, no key. This is how you give a cleaner or a guest access without cutting a key, and it is the headline feature of a keypad smart lock.

  • Apple Home Key / phone tap.On supported locks, a secure digital key lives in your iPhone or Apple Watch Wallet, and you hold the phone near the lock to open it - no app to launch, and it keeps working even when the phone's battery is nearly flat.

No lock offers all of these, and that is fine - the mix a lock offers is a big part of what you are choosing. A hidden design may skip the keypad on purpose; an Apple-first lock may add Home Key but not fingerprint; a value lock may focus on a great keypad and skip the phone tap. Decide which ways in your household actually needs, then shortlist locks that offer them.

How it connects: Bluetooth, built-in Wi-Fi, or a hub

This is the piece buyers most often get wrong, so it is worth being precise. There are three connection styles, and they decide whether you can control the lock from far away:

Bluetooth only. The lock talks to your phone over Bluetooth when you are within range - roughly the same room or just outside the door. That is enough for app unlock as you walk up, but it is not enough for remote control or alerts when you are away, because Bluetooth does not reach the internet on its own.

Built-in Wi-Fi. The lock has its own Wi-Fi radio and joins your home network directly, so it can reach the internet with no extra hardware. A hub or bridge. Some locks talk over Bluetooth (or a low-power radio like Thread or Zigbee) and rely on a separate hub plugged in nearby to bridge them to your network. The key thing to internalize: connection style and unlock method are separate questions. A Bluetooth-only lock can still have a keypad and a fingerprint reader that work perfectly at the door - it just cannot tell you from the office who came home unless you add a hub. Power: batteries, warnings and backups

Because a smart lock is electric, power is the honest reality you have to plan for. Almost all of them run on standard batteries (often AA), and how long those last depends on how often the lock cycles and which radios it runs - a Wi-Fi lock checking in constantly drains faster than a Bluetooth one. The good news is that locks warn you well before they die: you get low-battery alerts in the app, on the keypad, or both, usually with weeks of runway, so a dead lock should never be a surprise. And if a battery does die before you swap it, well-designed locks give you a backup that needs no power at all. Many keep a traditional keyway so a metal key opens the door. Others expose emergency contacts on the outside where you can touch a 9-volt battery to jump the lock just long enough to enter and then replace the internal cells. Two software features turn a smart lock from "a lock you can control" into "a lock that looks after itself." Auto-lock re-locks the door automatically after a set time or once you close it, so you stop worrying about whether you actually locked up - a genuinely useful safety net for anyone who has driven off unsure. Geofencinguses your phone's location to know when you are arriving or leaving, so the lock can unlock as you reach the door or lock behind you as you leave the neighborhood. Can I still use a normal key with a smart lock?
