Cover the entry points, not the yard
Think of your home as having a small number of ways in, and put your cameras on those rather than on open space. For almost every house the real entry points are the front door, the back or side door, the driveway and garage, the ground-floor windows, and any gate or path that leads to the back of the property. That is usually five or six spots, not twenty, and it is a far better spend than a ring of cameras staring at fence lines nobody will climb. Height and angle: the part that makes footage usable
Where you mount a camera vertically decides whether the footage is evidence or just motion. Too high and everyone in frame is a foreshortened hat and shoulders you could never identify. Fight the light: backlight, glare and night vision
Light ruins more camera footage than any other single thing, and most of it is avoidable at mount time. The classic failure is backlight: point a camera at a doorway with a bright sky or a low morning or evening sun behind it and the camera exposes for the bright background, turning the person you care about into a black silhouette. Where you can, mount so the camera looks with the daylight rather than into it - the sun at the camera's back, not in its face - and check the view at the times of day that spot actually gets direct sun, not just when you happen to be installing it.
Night vision has its own placement rules. An outdoor camera's infrared or low-light night mode works best with a clear line of sight and no bright light source - a porch bulb or a street lamp - glaring straight into the lens, which washes the image out. Placement and hardware are not separate decisions - the way a camera gets power quietly limits where it can go. A wired camera has to be within reach of an outdoor-safe outlet or a routed cable, which often rules out the very corners of a property you most want to watch. A battery or solar camera mounts anywhere with no cord, but a solar model needs its panel in real daylight to keep up, so a shaded gate or a north-facing wall is a poor home for one. A camera aimed to protect your home should not end up surveilling someone else's.
