How to Choose a Security Camera

Ignore the spec-sheet arms race. A handful of decisions - where it goes, how it is powered, where the footage lives, and whether it fits your ecosystem - settle almost every camera purchase. Here is how to work through them and land on the right type.

Camera listings compete on numbers - megapixels, degrees, ratings - but a good purchase is decided by a short list of plain questions, not by whoever prints the biggest spec. Where does the camera need to go? How will it get power? Where will the footage live, and will that cost a monthly fee? A wide field of view covers more of a scene from one mount, which is great for a whole yard but can leave faces small and distant.
